Statue of Manuel Ventura, Alameda park, Santiago de Compostela

Statue of the two Marias, Alameda park, Santiago de Compostela, Galicia, Spain, 2017-10-10.

The statue of the two Marias stands at the entrance to the Alameda Park as a quiet reminder of Spains conservative dictatorship and Civil War. The two sisters faced persecution during the Spanish Civil War for their family ties to harbouring fugitives and outspoken liberal views. It is believed they became quite extravagent characters as a result of the persecution and would dress flamboyantly and walk around the Alameda Park, flirting and joking with students.
