Saharan landscape, Merzouga, Erg Chebbi, Morocco
Sahara Desert landscape, Merzouga, Erg Chebbi region of the Moroccan Sahara, Southern Morocco, 2015-11-03.
The Moroccan Sahara desert is divided into two main regions; Erg (“dune”) Chebbi and Erg Chigaga.
The Erg Chebbi region is more easily accessed from both Fez and Marrakesh, with well built asphalt roads taking you right upto the face of the dunes. It sees increased tourism as a result. A short walk from the historic trans-Saharan caravan-route town of Merzouga, and you’ll find yourself immersed by the Chebbi dunes. The drive alongside towering walls of sand dunes as you approach in itself is a spectacle. The Chebbi region has the tallest dunes in Morocco, which is another reason as to why its the most popular choice, and its views of mountains in Algeria in the distance is not to be missed.
Whether bound for the “chebbi" or the “chigaga" dunes, your journey from the Imperial cities of Fez or Marrakech will take you through significant changes in landscape, from barren rocky plateaus to lush Oasis valleys, before reaching the desert itself.
