150th anniversary memorial of Gandhi Jayanti (Ghandi's Birthday)
KANYAKUMARI, INDIA - 2nd October 2019 - This year marked the 150th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday. In Kanyaumari - the southernmost point of India - a memorial mandapam was built in his honour and held some of his ashes before they were scattered at the point where three oceans meet - a place which Gandhi felt was unequalled in this world. Standing 79 feet tall (in honour of Gandhi’s age at his death) the mandapam was specially designed so sunlight will fall on the exact place where is ashes were kept at noon on the day of his birthday. Many people attend the event each year and try to reach out and touch the light as it falls on the sacred spot.
